Kenny Drewry, a Dover, Arkansas, farmer/beekeeper moves a swarm of bees into a new hive today during an educational tour of Drewry Farm & Orchards. This is one of three swarms he relocated while visitors watched in amazement.
Kenny and his wife, Nancy, grow many different types of produce such as several varieties of peaches, melons, tomatoes, okra, beans, peas, squash, cucumbers, soybeans, watermelons, and pumpkins. According to Nancy, "We sell everything we grow."
The Drewrys have been married 31 years. During that time, Kenny has "read and read" and had "lots of trial and error," Nancy said. They have been Pope County Farm Family of the Year due to the large amount of produce they grow.
As he led the group of tourists through the 1,200 trees orchard, Kenny explained how he had amended the soil in order to have strong, healthy trees. Moving past several rows of peach trees, Kenny stopped at one variety and said, "The Ruston Red is hardy." Pointing to another tree, he exclaimed, "And here's my favorite, the China Pearl." The China Pearl is "a white peach which is less acidic and sweeter than others," he continued.
Behind the orchard is a field of clover, which the Drewrys grow for the bees. They also grow soybeans for the bees. Kenny told the group of guests about an afternoon during which he conducted an experiment to observe the behavior of the bees. From the experiment, he concluded, "Genetically modified soybeans are turning off the extremely hygenic bee."
The Drewrys also have a store on-site where they make delicious designer cookies, peach and other types of bread, salsa and several other delectable goodies which they sell to the public.
For their open house, the Drewrys invited their neighbors, David and Delinda from Viney Creek Farm, who brought their small herd of Nigerian Dwarf Goats, which they raise for milk and show. In addition, a brother-in-law had several rabbits available for children to pet.
The Drewrys give educational tours for college classes and schools. They also have a Facebook page which tells more information about Drewry Farm & Orchards.
