We asked Little Rock Police Department Public Affairs Sergeant Cassandra Davis about gangs in Little Rock. Below are our questions, followed by her answers.
Q: What can parents do to keep their kids out of gangs?
A: Stay involved and monitor their activities.
Q: How many gangs are in Little Rock?
A: LR has about 30 active street gangs a membership ranges from 2 to 20+
Q: Are gangs on the rise?
A: No
Q: When did gangs start making an appearance in Little
Rock?
A: Gangs started in LR in approximately 1988 with the arrival of crack cocaine in town.
Q: What should people do if they encounter gang violence?
A: Call police and report activity
Q: What is LRPD doing to fight back against gangs?
A: We monitor criminal activity and note whether that activity
is gang related. Gangs and gang members are currently
involved in ALL types of criminal activity. Although, some
victims or suspects may be in a gang the criminal behavior is not gang related.
Q: Are you all seeing a rise in turf wars or graffiti related to
gangs?
A: No, most graffiti seen by the community is "tagger" graffiti and not related to gangs. We have not seen any disputes among gang member over "turf".
